This six-week Core Competency Course on Organization and Leadership is designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to excel as leaders in higher education settings. Through a blend of theoretical frameworks, practical applications, and interactive discussions, this course will provide a comprehensive understanding of various leadership styles, personal and professional growth, and strategic organizational practices.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
- Leadership Styles: Engage in self-assessment to identify and cultivate your unique leadership strengths, and explore different leadership styles and understand their impact on organizational dynamics.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:
This course will primarily cover the foundational and intermediate levels of NODA’s Organization and Leadership Core Competency and is intended for new and mid-level professionals.

INSTRUCTOR:
Dr. Gregory V. Wolcott has worked professionally in higher education for 25 years in student engagement, academic support, and OTR, and currently serves as AVP for Student Success at San José State University. Dr. Wolcott’s involvement in NODA is extensive including service on the Board of Directors, faculty member in the Orientation Professionals Institute, external consultant, and recipient of the Outstanding Research Award for his dissertation. His research has been highlighted in feature articles of the Journal of College Orientation and Transition (JCOT) and other publications. Dr. Wolcott has also participated in various associations including JASPA, NASPA, and AHEPPP.
PARTICIPANT EXPECTATIONS / TIME COMMITMENT:
This will be a hybrid (both synchronous and asynchronous) course and is expected to take 2-3 hours of work per week. There will be six virtual class meetings on Wednesdays at 11am - 12pm CST (January 15, 22, 29, and February 5, 12, and 19, 2025)
The instructor will hold virtual office hours throughout the course to connect on one one with participants and assist them with the completion of assignments and their professional development plan.

To best facilitate course learnings and interactions, participants are expected to:
- Attend virtual class meetings
- Complete asynchronous assignments by the due dates through Canvas. Earlier submissions with discussion board posts can encourage greater, and more in-depth discussion.
- Be invested in this course by collaborating and discussing course content with peers. We expect participants to engage in our course assessments in an effort to enhance the course format and curriculum.
