Please note that this course includes six virtual classes, scheduled for November 4, 11, and 18 and December 2, 9, and 16. All classes take place at 2-3 pm CT via Zoom.

The Core Competency Course on Organization and Leadership is designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to excel as leaders in higher education settings. Through a blend of theoretical frameworks, practical applications, and interactive discussions, this course will provide a comprehensive understanding of various leadership styles, personal and professional growth, and strategic organizational practices.

This course will explore a variety of themes within the Organization and Leadership Core Competency, including: 

  • Leadership Styles: Engage in self-assessment to identify and cultivate your unique leadership strengths, and explore different leadership styles and understand their impact on organizational dynamics.
  • Self-Assessment and Growth: Gain insights into your strengths, values, and leadership capabilities, and develop strategies for continuous personal and professional growth as a leader.
  • Philosophical Approach to Orientation, Transition, and Retention: Develop a personal and professional philosophy for your work in student orientation, transition, and retention programs, and understand the importance of creating supportive environments for student success.
  • Ethical Decision Making: Explore ethical frameworks and their application in decision-making processes; learn to navigate complex challenges with integrity and transparency.
  • Conflict Mediation and Resolution: Gain skills in conflict mediation and resolution to foster a positive and collaborative workplace.
  • Staff Recruitment, Selection, and Hiring: Understand best practices in staff recruitment, selection, and hiring; explore strategies to reduce unconscious bias in recruitment processes.
  • Supervision: Enhance your supervisory skills and develop effective supervision techniques to support and mentor your team.
  • Structure and Governance of Colleges and Universities: Explore the overall structure and governance models of higher education institutions.
  • Strategic Planning: Learn the fundamentals of strategic planning and its importance in organizational development.
  • Professional Development Plan: Create a comprehensive professional development plan throughout the course where you will identify personal goals, objectives, and actionable steps to enhance your career

These discussions will enhance your understanding of the course material and provide practical insights from real-world experiences.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By participating in this course, individuals will:

COURSE TAKEAWAYS:

INTENDED AUDIENCE:

This course will primarily cover the foundational and intermediate levels of NODA’s Organization and Leadership Core Competency and is intended for new and mid-level professionals.

TIME COMMITMENT:

As an online course with a weekly synchronous component, participants registered for the course should expect to complete 1–2 hours of independent work each week prior to attending the synchronous meetings. This independent work will be reflected upon and discussed in the synchronous meetings. Your dedication to the asynchronous coursework is appreciated.

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR:

Dr. Gregory V. Wolcott has over 25 years of experience in student engagement, transition, retention, and new student programs. He has taught courses in counseling and leadership, as well as first-year experience seminars. Dr. Wolcott has participated on the NODA Board of Directors as an at-large member and served as a faculty member in the Orientation Professionals Institute and for the Organization & Leadership Core Competency course. His work and research have been highlighted in feature articles of the Journal of College Orientation, Transition, and Retention (JCOTR), and in 2006, Dr. Wolcott received NODA’s Outstanding Research Award for his dissertation, which focused on the retention and persistence of college freshmen. Dr. Wolcott has also participated in various committees of JASPA and NASPA and served as one of ten professional consultants through the NODA, having completed numerous external reviews. 

Dr. Wolcott is the CEO and Founder of Wolcott & Associates, LLC. This consulting firm provides the highest quality coaching and consultation to higher education professionals and organizations across the globe. In addition, Dr. Wolcott also currently serves as the Associate Dean of Students at Santa Clara University, supporting student well-being and coordinating the conduct process in the Ignatian tradition. He has served in previous leadership roles at San Jose State University and the University of San Francisco, the latter of which is where he earned his PhD in International and Multicultural Education.

This course will skip the week of US Thanksgiving and will not meet on November 25, 2025

  • December 2, 2–3 pm Central – Synchronous Meeting #4

  • December 16, 2–3 pm Central – Synchronous Meeting #6
  • December 19 – Participant submissions of the final assignment are due to Canvas for grading and completion of post-course assessment via Qualtrics
